If you notice bad vibes in your home, there are several techniques you can use to remove negative energy. Do you find at times your home can be clean and organized, but still have a heavy feeling? Even if you’re not a trained Zen master, the subtle frequencies of energy can be felt if you pay attention. A cleansed and energized room should feel light, fresh, and inviting when you enter. Here are some simple tips to help keep your home clear so you can experience tranquility and harmony in your domestic life.

One of the easiest and quickest ways to for getting rid of negative energy is smudge your home. Sage had been considered a sacred plant by Native Americans for thousands of years. Burning sage was used for many purposes, such as energy cleansing, ritual ceremonies, and healing. Today, burning sage is used by medicine people all over the world to help restore vitality and health. It has the power to neutralize negative energy by burning away any unwanted energy and carrying it away with its smoke.

Another popular way is burning Palo Santo sticks. Palo Santo, Spanish for Holy Wood, is one of the most fragrant woods in the world. Its sweet scent of pine, mint, and lemon has, for centuries, been a messenger of healing and good fortune. Shamans, saints, and those seeking a stronger spiritual connection with the world use palo santo to protect, heal and recover from ailments and illnesses. When used for smudging or burning, palo santo can eliminate negative energy, creating a calmer, more tranquil space.

Lastly, and a personal favorite, is using Frankincense. Frankincense, can be used on its own but my recommendation is to allow it to enhance the purifying powers of sage and Palo Santo. It's like super charging your cleansing ritual. Also called “the Transformer,” Frankincense has strong detoxifying and purifying properties and a sweet aroma that helps to absorb negative energy. Also nicknamed “Liquid Gold,” Frankincense is known in some cultures to provide protection, elevate spiritual awareness, and ease feelings of stress and anxiety. Yes please, SIGN ME UP!

How to use Sage:
First, make sure you have at least one door or window open to the outside so that the negative energy can leave your home. Take the sage bundle and light it for about 30 seconds. Should it catch fire, blow it out, as what you're looking for is the smoke. Using a feather or simply creating a figure 8 with the bundle, waft the smoke into the corners and ceilings, taking note to get all the rooms in your home (especially high traffic areas as they can accumulate negative energy over time). I like to start the sage cleansing practice at the front door, which helps keep out negative energy from the outside. To go even deeper with your cleansing, you can also say a mantra out loud, which will resonate with your heart and also enhance the energy field with the sounds of your voice. Here is one that I like to use:
"I cleanse this space of any unwanted, negative energies and only allow that of the highest vibration to remain"

How to use Palo Santo:
Using Palo Santo is really very simple. Take one stick and light it (I like to use my gas stove but a lighter will work just fine). Allow the stick to burn for 30 seconds to a minute, then carefully blow it out. Set an intention about what you want to clear out of your space, then move from corner to corner, removing any bad energy, uplifting your spirit, and filling your home with good fortune. Once you feel you have cleansed your space, place the palo santo stick in a fire proof bowl and allow the embers to burn out. Remember to always exercise care and caution when working with fire.

If your home has experienced any illnesses or heated arguments, I advise using a combination of these cleansing tools on a daily basis until you feel your space is light, airy and free of any unwanted remnants.

Yes, it’s that easy. And the benefits can be felt almost immediately. After a cleansing practice, the space should feel renewed and full of life. Happy cleansing!
